Does anyone agree with me that black Latinos are less hung up on race than African-Americans? I've noticed how nice they are. I think that in Latin countries, black people are viewed differently. They are not hung up on their race. "Mi *****/a" (my black one) is used as a term of endearment towards a black person. Also, the exotic beauty of black women is celebrated. I feel more at home with them. I'm sick of, constantly, hearing about racism (from a certain group.) I know that racism is a reality, and everyone is subjected to it at some time, but, always, arguing about it has me tired. What do you all think? | | I have a lot of dark skinned Latino friends from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic,Cuba and Columbia and I think I know what you're alluding to but prejudice does exist in those countries but more related, perhaps, to social standing rather than race per se. Racism also exists in those countries. I do agree with you that talking about racisim a lot, especially griping and whining, can be a drag and tiresome, but we can never stop thinking about and discussing how to end it and other kinds of hate in the world. | Most Latin Americans consider themselves white yet US Latinos consider themselves "brown"- why? Why is it that most Latin Americans consider themselves white even if they're only like 1/8 European while the rest is black or Indian, yet so many US Latinos consider themselves "brown" (like brown's even a race)? In Latin America white is the cool thing to be, the thing that everyone strives for and checks on the census. It's just one big contest to boast about who has the most Euro blood. Yet so many US Latinos go the opposite route and choose to segregate from and create unnecessary tension with the non-Hispanic whites. They could just as easily be "white" seeing as many of them ARE white and Indian (note how non-rez Anglo Native Americans and mestees are just treated like white people).
Which leads to another question- why are so many Latinos so hung up on racial identity when you think we'd in fact be *less* obsessed with it since most of us are mixed anyway and therefore would waste less time on that and more on our individual selves or nationality? My mom's Chicana (mestiza- Spanish & Native American) and my dad's Irish-American, so I could call myself white if I wanted to or even brown (the two terms becomes so broad and confusing) but I don't think of myself as either- I just think of myself as me. As far as ethnicity is concerned- I think of myself as Irish and Mexican…and proud, not to mention American...not a color. To embrace actual cultures is fun...to focus on a color and embrace a "raza" is lame and meaningless.
| I think it just boils down to ignorance. I work for a company that conducts surveys, and a large portion of our respondants are "Hispanic/Latino", and when we ask them their racial background for demographics, they insist that their "race" is Hispanic or Latino. They don't realize that neither of those titles describes a race, and most of them are either white or Indian, or a mix of both.
Added to the fact that there is a racist movement in Mexico dedicated to "taking back" California. It helps their sense of entitlement to falsley believe that they're a seperate race from other whites. It's ridiculous. My family is from Mexico, and it's annoying to witness this ignorance over and over again from my culture. | Latinos answer this: Do typical white Americans think all spanish speakers are Mexican? How ignorant! I'm 2nd generation Ecuadorian. Most WASPS don't even think I'm hispanic. But when they hear me speak spanish, I get "OH, are you Mexican? Are you Puerto Rican?"
What dumb @sses! Forget about when my very WASPee looking HISPANIC husband proudly says he's Cubano/Argentino! They are so hung up on what they think hispanics look like. Don't they know hispancis come in all varieties? | Well, I'm white. My husband is from El Salvador. And to be honest, we are ignorant. Before I met my husband, I thought all hispanics were Mexican. We (meaning I) don't really pay attention to the different countries in Central America...to us it's all the same. When I met my husband, he made sure that I didn't call him 'Mexican' - and he educated me on that topic.
But, we don't mean any offense by it, we just are not educated about it. The word Mexican to us means hispanic.
By the way, we are not WASPS - at least us white people don't mean any offense when we say what we say, but just because most of us are ignorant doesn't make us stupid...or WASPS. Maybe if you had a better attitude to us you would get more positive reinforcement with us. | Why are Indians from India so color struck? You are a black race. It must be embedded in Hinduism. No Hindu Gods are Black nor brown nor reflective of the skin tones of most Indians. Blacks Americans, Latinos, Africans, Arabs are not as hung up on color as Indians are. It is sad as everyone laughs at their(Indians) self-hate. Stop trying to be some race you are not and stop having pictorial representations of God! | | It is inbred in the caste system they have practised there for hundreds of years, and is not going to change anytime soon. | How come no one told me that Latinos knew how to party until now? I have a couple friends who are Latino and they started inviting to parties with them. I have never had so much fun in my life. I have not hung out with my white friends in over 2 months. I feel so stupid that I thought all Latino parties would be like the movies where there were gang bangers everywhere and I was probably going to get shot. I'm so glad that I went and discovered how much fun I could have.
This one party the mom would walk around and if you weren't drinking she would start pouring tequila down your mouth. Then when she found out I didnt know how to dance she started dancing with me. I loved it! Also I always have places to crash and one time at this girls house she made me food and I tried to pay her and she got offended and was like your a guest in my house you dont have to pay anything. And besides running into the occasional douchebag everyone else treats me like I have been a friend of theirs for years.
I will never go to another suburban party if my life depended on it. Now after seeing the real deal if I had no plans but a suburban party I would rather just sit home and play video games. | | I am so happy that you discovered at this time that everything that you hear about certain races of people aren't true, and that you actually was gutzy enough to explore on your own that there are actually some decent and kind people in this world and they are of other nationalities.....Wonderful! | Weird or Not? To make a long story short, when i first went to my new school (4 months ago), i hung out with all black people. Now, i hang out with all Latinos. Many people think it's weird (including my dad, step-sisters, and people at my school). Is their a problem with that. I'm mixed ( black, white, indian) What's your opinion? | | NO you just probly have more in common with them than you do with any other ethnic groupe | Why do white people not like white people? Okay. Some it has come to my attention and I am curious to know what you people think.
Lately people are saying Arabs, Eygpytians,Indians, Spanish/Hispanic/Latino/Asian people are Caucasian/White.
What makes you believe this. Each group mostly contains brown skinned people or very light skin like a Puerto Rican complexion.
If you called an Asian person in my country white that would be very offensive. So my question is if we are white, why are we part of the minority group ?
Why are we discriminated against whites and called bad slurs by white people if we are white?
Why couldn't any of us join the KKK without being slaughtered or hung in a tree?
Why are we called Asians, Arabs, Indians, Latinos/Hispanic..etc If we are supposedly white?
I am aware that we have european blood but we many of us also have african traces as well although we have more european blood but that is not enough reason. We do not look white we look more close to black people than we do white. I'm tryin | | Again, stop trolling as an Asian. It's quite pathetic to say the least. | Why does everything have to be so hard? Ok. So I'm Italian, Armenian, Hungarian, and German which makes me White. When I was in high school, none of the White guys thought I was White. They all thought I was Mexican.
Then it's like, I had some guys that I hung out with who were Mexican. I thought they were cool and I liked them.
But then onetime I asked out a girl who was Palestinian/Colombian and she turned me down saying she only dated Latinos.
I mean gimme a break. I don't want to hear that, "Latinas only date Latinos because they think the average White teen is racist" crap either. I was rejected by my own race for **** sakes.
Sometimes I feel like some of these biracial people who get rejected by Black and White people. It's like you're not good enough for either side. | I really don't think that people like or dislike people based on their skin color specifically.
It appears your question is more about ethnicity and culture not race because you speak about Latin, Mexican and Palestinian people. Latin or hispanic/Mexican is ethnicity. Palestinian and Columbian relates to nationalism. | Why do people still judge America by what they see on TV? I'm tired of ignorant *** people from other parts of the world judging me, the US, and anybody from there, as a fat, racist pig.
Don't they realize that what they are doing is actually the same thing that they are accusing us of?? And we are not actually doing it in the first place...
Growing up in a big city in the states, I went to school with, grew up in a neighborhood with, and hung out with: White people (from americas and europe, black people (from Africa and Americas), latinos, arabs, etc. etc. etc. and I still to this day don't give a **** where you are from, until some of them from outside the states make some ignorant *** comments about how racist and unaccepting we are , without even getting a chance to know us. (reverse discrimination) | | Because people all across the Globe are dumb. Every nation is dumb. Nationalism/patriotism is corrupt and dumb. |
